Now that Spring has sprung and we enter the homestretch of another academic year, here are a few items you should be aware of:

CTB Writing Assessment
This year SMS students wrote informative and persuasive essays. The fourth grade had two students attain a perfect score of 6.0 and several with a 5 or 5.5. The seventh grade had 5 students attain a perfect score of 6.0. and several with a 5.0 or 5.5. Over 60% of our 7th graders scored a 5.0 or higher. Wow! Congratulations to all students and teachers on a job well done.

Operation Shoebox
St. Michael's School and Parish is sponsoring Operation Shoebox on April 2, 2011 from 12:00 to 5:00 in the St. Michael's School Cafeteria. Operation Shoebox is a "packing event" to collect and ship donated care packages to US Troops based oversees. We are in need of volunteers and donations. Items needed include: lip balm, sun block, moist wipes, bars of soap, small bottles of shampoo, deodorant, powdered drink mixes, cereal/snack/granola bars, microwave popcorn, gum, candy, peanuts, pretzels, pens, writing paper, envelopes and 1 gallon freezer bags. Items can be dropped off at the parish center. If you can volunteer or need more information please contact Kerri Cartnick at 908-709-1768 or cartnick@comcast.net

Talent Show
The kids are beginning to prepare for the Talent Show. The spectacular event will take place on April 6th at 7:00PM in the newly refurbished SMS auditorium. Students in grades 5 to 8 will be participating. Please join us for an evening of entertainment featuring singing, dancing, acting and playing musical instruments.

Relay for Life
After a long week of Terra Nova testing the kids were able to have a little fun, get a little exercise and give a donation to a wonderful charity, Relay for Life. SMS raised $2,686! AMAZING! Many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Bracke for coordinating and running this entire day of activities. We had six stations with enjoyable exercises and afterwards students quenched their thirst with water and oranges. This year an American Cancer Society representative even stopped by and gave kids pencils and post-its as a thank you for a job well done.
